French Toast Casserole Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 (8 oz) crispy French bread, cut into small pieces or more as needed
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • Roof:
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste

Preparation method:

First start by greasing a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.

After that, make the French toast: Combine the brown sugar and butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat until the butter is melted and the sugar dissolves, 2 to 4 minutes.

Then pour the butter and brown sugar mixture into the prepared baking dish. Then spread the French bread pieces on top in a 1 1/2 to 2 inch layer.

After that beat the milk, eggs and vanilla in a bowl until well blended. Then pour over the pieces of bread and press the bread with a spatula so that the bread absorbs the liquid. After that, cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hours overnight.

Then when ready to bake, remove the french toast from the fridge and discard the plastic film. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).

After that make the frosting: Then mix the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Spread over the french toast.

Then bake in the preheated oven until the casserole is golden brown and bubbly, about 30 minutes, covering with aluminum foil at any time if the top is browning too much.

Last to serve, cut into squares and invert onto serving plates.
